Spotlight on the Fishery

Mount Falcon’s own Fishery Manager Michael Egan took home the top spot in the Irish Open Spey Championship held on the River Moy in Foxford the second to last weekend in August. Michael secured the win in a down to the wire tie breaker with Martin Kiely of Limerick at the Foxford Riverfest. To take home the victory, Michael was casting using a high-performance Spey setup designed for extreme distance and precision. His equipment included a Gravity 15 ft competition rod designed by CND coupled with the Gaelforce Beast Extreme distance line, known for its robust design and casting efficiency. The Beast line was custom cut to 72 feet. With his winning cast of 174 feet to the distance, Michael took home a traveling trophy, a write up in the local newspaper, and bragging rights for the next year.

When our fishery manager isn’t winning fly-casting competitions, he is looking after the two miles of fishery he manages here at Mount Falcon. With only a few weeks left in the fishing season, Michael recently reflected that despite some challenging weather and water temperature conditions, this season has seen encouraging results both for the wildlife in the river and for the fishery's guests. With back-to-back years with mixed weather, it takes an experienced angler who knows the ins and outs of the river to yield the best results for our guests.

The river has a draw for many, something that pulls people back following the fish. In his role as Fishery Manager Egan says it is his job keep the fishery in good condition and to create “a good experience for the people that come.” “You couldn’t walk into a better place,” Egan says of Ireland’s salmon capital, adding “It’s on our doorstep.”

The fishing season at Mount Falcon runs from mid-April to late-September.
